Get your bathroom in order!

With all of us spending a little more time at home right now, we’ve been looking inward (quite literally) and finding ourselves in the bathroom a little more often. Why do we have all this stuff? What does it actually do? And why does it smell like that? No place in the home raises more questions than the bathroom. Whether it’s expired products, too much of something you don’t use, or too much of a good thing taking up all the shelf space, a good declutter can help bring back a sense of calm to your shower space. Ready to be ruthless? Here are our top tips for getting to grips with the mess.

Streamline your routine
Skincare isn’t that complicated. All you really need is a regimen that includes the basics: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize. Sure, there are plenty of reasons to use a serum to combat early signs of aging or a skin-friendly serum to target redness, but let’s start with the basics. The simple rule is this: if you use the product regularly (at least once a month), it will have a place in your bathroom. If not, it’s in the trash or in the drawer.

Make sure the function of the product suits your skin
The most important thing is; the right stuff for the right skin. Applying an oil control face wash to very dry skin will not only not produce results, it can also cause irritation and other problems, such as acne. So make sure everything in your bathroom cabinet is fit for purpose and contains the right skin care ingredients.

Check the expiration date
Just like that suspicious-looking carton of milk in the fridge, your moisturizer has a limited shelf life. Somewhere on every personal care product, there’s a little icon that looks like an open jar with a number inside. This is the maximum number of months you can use it after opening. If you continue to use the product, it could be doing more harm than good as bacteria will start to grow in the bottle or jar. If you can’t remember when you started using it, take a look at the color of the product—most products darken after their expiration date due to oxidation. If in doubt, throw it out.

Order in the chaos
Gels, creams, waxes, sprays, oils, balms, powders - there are endless products that can help you keep your face and the things that grow out of it under control. They’re handy to have, but most of them you don’t need on a daily basis. Make sure the products you apply every day are easily accessible and that the products that are for weekly or monthly maintenance are kept on the higher shelves or in the drawer. The products in your bathroom will be different in the summer months than in the winter months.

Use Multi-Tasking Products
If you’re short on space in your bathroom, go for products that do more than one job. A cleanser that also exfoliates? Awesome. A shampoo that doubles as a body wash? Perfect. A face mask that doubles as a shaving balm? Awesome. Not only are multitasking products convenient, they also provide clarity.
